Breaking
Up
Inch by inch, we both flinch,
I try not to interrupt,
Then comes the inevitable,
Today we’re breaking up.
Patterns don’t persuade me,
What I do is wrong,
My instinct is the ruler,
When I can’t carry on.
I know my mind is elsewhere,
A dangling dichotomy,
Lost is pure commitment,
Desire is to be free.
So why do I persevere,
Is it reason or result,
Or the risk of amity,
A slap or an insult.
Dangling on a precipice,
One false move I’ll fall,
Into a mire filled with fire,
And I know that’s not all.
Sitting tapping, then recapping,
Moving words around,
Whichever way they’re not okay,
Some were lost and never found.
There are songs, of rights and wrongs,
And who did this and that,
Breaking up is hard to do,
Don’t leave without your hat.
So if you go, you’ll never know,
The reason why it’s over,
Breaking up is letting go,
No more rolling in the clover.
