Dancing

In the moonlight.

Dancing in the moonlight
dancing cheek to cheek
not for the faint-hearted
nor food for the meek.

Swaying to the rhythm
and moving to the beat
like an automaton
savouring the heat.

When the dance is over
and the band is gone
will I be with the one I love
or standing here alone.

I’ve danced the dance a thousand times
and mostly in my dreams
the askance dance of disguises
where nothing as it seems.

Sometimes my partner is my lover
and other times, my nemesis
and when she breathes in my ear
I fear her poison kiss.

My heart alarm is on suspicion
the temperatures about to break
I’m sceptical and dubious
and scream, for heaven’s sake.

This is not the dream I asked for
you crept into my head
whilst I was unaware
in dreamland in my bed.

It’s turned into a horror show
can I change the channel, please
and say goodbye to the askance dance
I hope it’s not a disease.
