Distant Thunder

And there was a rainbow

The rumblings on the horizon
lightning flashes from afar
warning storms approaching
prowling angry and bizarre.

Uneasy stirrings of the feelings
and evocations from the past
a counting of the seconds
between the first and last.

Dogs flee beneath the tables
and succumb to fear and scare
tails tucked between their legs
and cringe in mute despair.

The palpable charged electrons
and fingers of white lightning
the rumble of the thunder
electrified and frightening.

It’s roaming like an omen
an eclipse from elements
and hangs there in suspension
leaning on the precipice.

Shelved memories are returning
so carefully placed in store
brought on by distant thunder
now knocking on the door.

Stealthy steely and persistent
no distant memory
storm clouds are building
in a new trajectory.

Will the clouds blow over
what will be the cost
or will the distant thunder
cause one more impost?

Then in the whisper of a heartbeat
caught in the undertow
white light shone through the thunder
and there was a rainbow.
