Navigating
By charts.
Up and down the charts in hieroglyphics
Rhythms and arrhythmias in a scrawl
Charts that show the way my heart is beating
Sometimes I wonder if I’m alive at all
There are charts for every conceivable notion
And directions were written down in double Dutch
Once there is a diagram to appraise me
The medico keep me in their clutch
Charts are meant to show abnormal rhythms
Something for the specialist to appraise
Also meant to baffle the patients
And send simple minds into a craze
Charts are maps to show where we are going
Across the sea in a liner or a boat
Follow charts to complete a safe passage
Not hit the rocks and keep the ship afloat
I navigate my way through troubled waters
I take turns according to the chart
I often stop and wonder where I’m going
And then follow the direction of my heart
In and out of aisles I meander
Up and down the streets and avenues
Looking for a place of safe refuge
I stop ponder and appreciate the views
There are charts to measure the infinitesimal
And graphs to show that I’m still alive
There’s commonsense and there’s intuition
And many things my brain cannot contrive
