Reflections on Clive James…

He’ll remain in our hearts for evermore

Clive James Australian author and poet par excellence.

He had to die yet to the end, he wouldn’t falter or would bend, now he’s gone he lingers on, maybe he’s just gone to the john.

Or else he’s somewhere watching us, on a tram or a bus, wherever he is there’s one thing for sure, he’ll remain in our hearts for evermore.

Warts and all he’d rise and fall, and yet to the end Clive stood tall, he reminisced on life and death, right up until his last breath.

A man of mighty wit and prose, it was in the UK that he rose, to prominence, and to fame, yet this Aussie lad he stayed the same.

His accent and sardonic ways, his poetry and great essays, he was just the boy from Kogarah, with a full stop and no comma.

His wistful tone of word and rhyme, counted days before his time, and irony he beatified, and explored things that he’d never tried.

It’s rare to think someone in sync, could keep swimming and never sink, Clive though left us with a smile, and he waited quite a while.

To finish off his books of rhyme, and leave with us a great design, a template of how to live to the end, Par excellence, Clive James, what a man and godsend.
