The Brass Tacks

Bread and butter.

It’s often back to basics
The brass tacks bread and butter
Down to the nitty-gritty
Or lose it down the gutter

Rudiments and requirements
Making an honest bob
Ways of doing business
Without being a slob

There is a cost when plots are lost
Desires turn to dust
A fundamental flutter
Is an elementary must

When I’m blue, the tried and true
Maintains my satisfaction
A return to the rudiments
It is better than inaction

Instinct is intrinsic
Knowledge is the key
Blended with intelligence
I’m sure that you’ll agree

Mixed up with myopia
Who put the blinkers on
Make the best of today
Tomorrow today’s gone

So I get down to the basics
One day at a time
I’m grateful for small mercies
And write them down in rhyme
