Underneath

Understanding.

Photograph thanks to Grindle Rudder.

Underneath the wraps of understanding
In places far away beneath the trees
Buried deep down under the foliage
Where there’s no visitation from the breeze.

And under the sparkling blue ocean
In secret coral caves and hideaways
In between the feathers of the heather
On endless fields covered in a purple blaze.

There are species that lie undiscovered
In environments unknown and never seen
Endangered through lack of knowledge
Hidden from all sight behind a screen.

Ignorance is the enemy of ecology
The delicate balance of how nature interacts
The flora and fauna need synchronicity
And few know the impacts or the facts.

We interfere each time we meddle with nature
Cut down a tree or have careless disregard
The natural balance is disturbed so easily
We need the vigilance to always be on guard.

Do I tread softly on the earth when I travel
How aware am I of the damage I have done
This rich environment that I take for granted
Easily used and then a hollow victory too easily won.

Greed and personal ambition
Carelessness and non-awareness are a scourge
It is easier to use discrimination
Disappear, then quietly re-emerge.
