You Unfolded

Like a flower

Photograph thanks to Veronica Hearn.

You unfolded like a flower.
and stripped the layers away
Then before my very eyes.
You went the other way.

Rivers dark and rivers light
Whom will you be with tonight?
You flow into my dreams, it seems.
Each moment of the night.

How did you materialise
And where were you before
One minute there’s my empty room.
Then you walked in the door.

You took away my breath
and sacrificed my heart
The moment I set eyes on you
Right there from the start.

Both my feet are floating.
This springtime afternoon
The daffodils are dancing.
Goodbyes were far too soon.

My fingers touch the silver strings.
In perfect harmonic pitch
Beauty personified
I wouldn’t want to switch.

On a September afternoon
We met and acquiesced
Then filled our cups with summer wine.
Held hands and lightly kissed.

Lead me up the garden path
I’ll follow in your tracks.
Until we reach the other side
With the wind at our backs
